Swedish artist Stina Folkebrant is currently adding a new mural to the National Nordic Museum's grounds. Viewable at the east end of the Museum's parking lot, Folkebrant is creating a black-and-white painting of reindeer similar to the works which have charmed viewers of the Museum's exhibition "Mygration." Work began on February 20 and will continue through March 3.

Weather allowing, Folkebrant will be working on the mural during the final week of the exhibition "Mygration." The artist will answer questions from the public between 3pm and 4pm daily and visitors are invited to check out Ballard's latest public art piece at any time.

Joan Stuart Ross Receives SOLA Award

10/26/2022

Joan Stuart Ross, Ballard resident and current co-owner/manager of BallardWorks, is one of 4 local recipients of the 2022 SOLA award. Founded in 2016, the SOLA (Support Old Lady Artists) Awards seeks to honor, encourage, and celebrate the lifetime contributions of women whose artwork has not been sufficiently or widely recognized. We're thrilled to extend our congratulations to Joan on this extraordinary achievement!

Joan's Artist Statement
"My work is inspired by exploratory imagery and inventions of color within relationships, connections, juxtapositions and dynamic arrangements. My art’s search for life force, energy, and meaning is to engage color and shape as value and depth. Metaphorical form, complementary and analogous colors, symbols and glyphs suggest a vital undercurrent.

The forms in my paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by growth--the poplar tree, hydrangea blossom, oyster shell, the grid, and implied text. Color, mark, rhythm, repetition, pattern and diversion reveal my visual reach and extension."

Learn more about Joan and the SOLA awards here or visit Joan's website.

Cognitive Dissidents - Recent Work by Seth Goodkind

10/21/2022

Seattle artist Seth Goodkind brings a whole new body of work to the public for the first time! Join us at Push/Pull on 11/17/2022 from 6-9pm for the opening reception (a Third Thursday event by Bal-Art).

“Cognitive Dissidents is my first 3-D art show. I have always enjoyed building models and working with miniatures, but over the last 5 years as my drawing and tattoo work has transitioned to digital and became a “job,” miniatures increasingly took over as my creative outlet. I love the idea of enclosed worlds. They have a quality of unreality that is isolated from our touch. The scenes feel living, but unreal, there is something inside of them that I’m not the architect of – I’m just giving them the opportunity to exist. Each piece comes together almost as a stream of consciousness assemblage, as an idea strikes me, and I find themes, scales, locations and elements that when put together, challenge or defy our sense of expected reality.”

Seth Goodkind is a tattoo artist at True Love Tattoo and a founding member of Push/Pull, an arts collective in Ballard, Seattle.

Where: Nordic Museum
When: (8/6/22 - 11/22/22)
*Note: The Nordic Museum is open from 10am-5pm; please bear this in mind when planning your Third Thursday)

The National Nordic Museum presents “Taking the High Ground: Tough Men and Tough Places in 19th Century Landscape Photography” with Dr. James Swensen. Several key photographers in the United States and Europe who emphasized their manly deeds as part of their work are shown in the Museum's current exhibition. "Taking the High Ground" explores the ways in which the photographs of and experiences in sublime landscapes from the rugged fjords of Norway to the bare-rock landscapes of the arid West perpetuated the notion of masculine identity. Where: Push/Pull, 2000 NW Market St, Seattle, 98107
When: September 15th, 6pm - 9pm, a Third Thursday event by Bal-Art.

We're bringing back one of our favorites from the other side of the country - Alli Good (Asheville, NC) - for a special solo show this September.

From the artist:
"This body of work is formed by and represents a perspective of anxiety. The show is titled “Prey” because the images contain some religious imagery but also images of anxiety from an AFAB perspective. The loss of rights. The baseline fear that AFAB people carry."

Can't get enough Alli Good? (We don't blame you!) Take her art with you everywhere you go - Alli will be tattooing at True Love Art Gallery & Tattoo on Capitol Hill Saturday the 17th & Sunday the 18th.

Alternate Realism: Denise Ortega Solo Show

8/14/2022

Venue: Push/Pull, 2000 MW Market St
Artist: Denise Ortega
August 18th 6pm - 9pm
More event info: https://www.meetup.com/events-at-push-pull-ballard/events/287003183/

Stop into Push/Pull for the opening of Denise Ortega's Alternate Realism, August 18th 6pm - 9pm! Opening during Third Thursday by Bal-Art. The show is up through September 13th.

Artist Bio

Denise is a Seattle based artist who, after taking a long hiatus from creating, rekindled her relationship with art 5 years ago. She began to use and see art as a therapeutic form of introspection and expression and grew to love the subtle ways it could calm her tumultuous mind in a bustling city. Her staple tools were pencil and micron pens, but later she branched out into watercolors, copics, and eventually digital illustration. Alternate Realism is Denise’s first solo show which highlights the ways she has been able to use art to express and heal over the past few years.

Each piece evokes raw emotions that tell a story of an individual struggling to find peace within themselves and the world around them. Nestled amongst what might seem like ordinary backgrounds and portraits are traces of things gone slightly awry, blood splatters and bandages, things not being what they seem.

Denise hopes that in sharing these pieces, she can open a dialogue about mental health awareness and the importance that art and creativity can play in all our lives. For Denise, art has been an invaluable tool which has allowed her to endure, cope with, and heal from the struggles that she experiences. She wishes it can be just as invaluable to others.

Artist Statement

My relationship with art has always been my most freeing. While in many other aspects I find myself comparing my abilities and experiences with others, art has always been a place I come to be myself, and to be alone. I find myself especially drawn to portraits, and am always consumed in capturing the subject’s gaze and expression, adding bits and pieces of my personality and objects from my life here and there (a clothing patch, a bandage, a ghost pin). I’ve only recently become aware of the inner peace and meditative states I’ve been able to achieve while creating. I hope that by showcasing my work I am able to share my experience with others and encourage them to see and try art as a therapeutic practice for themselves.
