Joan Stuart Ross, Ballard resident and current co-owner/manager of BallardWorks, is one of 4 local recipients of the 2022 SOLA award. Founded in 2016, the SOLA (Support Old Lady Artists) Awards seeks to honor, encourage, and celebrate the lifetime contributions of women whose artwork has not been sufficiently or widely recognized. We're thrilled to extend our congratulations to Joan on this extraordinary achievement! Joan's Artist Statement "My work is inspired by exploratory imagery and inventions of color within relationships, connections, juxtapositions and dynamic arrangements. My art’s search for life force, energy, and meaning is to engage color and shape as value and depth. Metaphorical form, complementary and analogous colors, symbols and glyphs suggest a vital undercurrent. The forms in my paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by growth--the poplar tree, hydrangea blossom, oyster shell, the grid, and implied text. Color, mark, rhythm, repetition, pattern and diversion reveal my visual reach and extension." Learn more about Joan and the SOLA awards here or visit Joan's website. Adumbration, 2021, acrylic, ink, collage, oil stick on rag paper, 42"x42"
